About

My name is Jochen Lillich. I was born in 1970 and spent my childhood in Philippsburg near Karlsruhe, Germany. 1997, I graduated as “Diplom-Informatiker (FH)” from the department of computer science at the University of Applied Sciences in Karlsruhe.
The first years of my professional career I spent as a self-employed expert on Open Source Software solutions. I specialised in Open Source system administration and software development training until, in 2004, I was offered a team lead position in the IT department of german web portal WEB.DE. After WEB.DE got acquired by 1&1 Internet AG, I got to lead the IT department “IT Operations Core”, managing three teams with about 30 people providing central IT services like backup solutions, database/storage systems and software deployment for a data center with more than 40.000 servers.
I live in Freiburg in southern Germany with my family, enjoying the city’s great combination of nature and infrastructure.
My areas of expertise
Working in the datacenter of a global player ISP, I combined my two passions: technology and management. My interest in electronic technology started when I was 11, I started working with computers in 1984 and have been a tech geek since then. Later, as an IT trainer, I discovered my interest in the human part of the equation. I consider the ability to help people succeed and my vision of an effective IT organization the base of a management and leadership role.
I’ve been concerned with personal productivity and self management for many years now, and on Selbstadministration (engl. “self administration”), I write about my findings.
I’m an avid Mac user; neither on Windows nor on Linux was I that productive. On Mein-neuer-Mac-Blog (engl. “my new mac blog”), my co-authors and I write about what’s interesting for Mac users, especially the new ones.
Perl has been my favourite programming language for more than a decade. Still occasionally, I solve a certain problem with Perl. And occasionally as well, I write about Perl on Perl-Programmieren.de. This is also the place where I publish my book “Perl-Meisterkurs” (“perl master class”), the training manual I use for my Perl seminars.
